Clouds!

Happy Monday young scientists!

Today I want to talk about CLOUDS! We see them outside - but what are they??

In the comments write what kinds of clouds you can see today outside!

And also one or more fact that you learned about clouds (in your own words)

Do you understand what they are?
What are clouds made of?

Clouds are made up of tiny droplets or frozen crystals of water.
How do clouds form?

Most clouds form as warm air rises in the atmosphere and cools down.
All air contains some water vapor and warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air.
As warm air cools the water vapor turns into tiny droplets of water or ice.
As more and more air cools down, more droplets form and they eventually become a cloud.
Wow!

Cloud Levels

Clouds are often described by the level or elevation where they form. There are high, middle, and low level clouds.

Types of Clouds

Meteorologists combine cloud characteristics and levels to get the ten main cloud types:
  • High cloud - cirrus, cirrocumulus, cirrostratus
  • Middle cloud - altostratus, altocumulus, nimbostratus
  • Low cloud - stratus, stratocumulus
  • Vertical - cumulus, cumulonimbus

1. Cirrus - Cirrus clouds are high level clouds that are thin and wispy. They appear during good weather.

4. Altostratus - Medium level clouds that form a dark gray covering. Usually they are a sign of rain.

5. Altocumulus - Middle level clouds that are small, white, and puffy.

6. Nimbostratus - These are thick, dark gray middle level to low level clouds. They usually bring rain or snow.

7. Stratus - Stratus clouds are low level clouds that are flat and tend to cover much of the sky. They are gray in color and may produce light rain or drizzle.

9. Cumulus - Cumulus clouds are low to mid-level clouds. They are big, white, puffy, and beautiful clouds. They usually mean good weather unless they grow really tall and turn into cumulonimbus clouds.

10. Cumulonimbus - Cumulonimbus clouds are very tall clouds that span all the way from low level to high level. They can cause violent thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail, and even tornadoes.

Interesting Facts about Clouds
  • A cloud that forms on the ground is called fog.
  • Even though clouds float in the air, a single cumulus cloud can weigh hundreds of tons.
  • Other planets with atmospheres have clouds including Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn.

  2. Hello Ellie,
The clouds are made of small water droplets, snowflakes and ice crystals. They form when water vapour that rises into the atmosphere cools. There are many types of clouds with different shapes. The clouds are very important for all living organisms because they protect us from the sun rays.
Today the clouds in the sky are kind Cirrus because it is good weather.

    1. Good job Aitor! You wrote lots of information. Clouds are important also because they're water of the water cycle - and they're very cool :)

  3. Hi Ellie,
I see in sciences class with Marina that clouds form because water vapour rises into the atmosphere and when it cools the clouds form.
Today I think there are altostratos clouds because they are dark grey, but sometimes the sun rises and the clouds are white like cirrus clouds.
    Have a nice day!!

  4. Hi Elli:Rain is an atmospheric phenomenon hydrometeorlogical type.
Wich starts with condensation of water vapor what forms drops of water
which go, on to forms the cloud.
    Rain depends on three factor:
    Atmospheric pressure
    Temperature and especially
    Atmospheric humidity
By kisses teacher Elli take care of yourself Elli kisses😘😘😘💜

  5. Hi Ellie
The clouds are formed wheen the water of the see evaporates.
They are so much tipes of clouds: normal clouds, fog...
There are several kinds of clouds, which we can classify into three groups: high clouds, medium clouds, and low clouds.
Also Rain depends on three factors:
    Temperature and especially
    Atmospheric humidity
    Atmospheric pressure
    Bye, bye!!!
    See you soon!
    Kisses!!!

  6. Hello Ellie
    How are you?
Here are the differents tipes of clouds:
One is High clouds cirrus cirrocumulus cirrostratus.
The other tipe is:Middle cloud is altostratus altocumulus nimbostratos.
The last tipe is Low cloud:
    Stratus stratocumulus Vertical cumulus cumulonimbus.
Here finish the differents tipes of clouds.
    BYE-BYE
