Today we're going to take a quick break from our time capsule and read a book along with actress Betty White.

The title of the book is Harry the Dirty Dog.

VE Day!

Happy Friday everyone! 

Today is VE day. 

Do you know what VE day is?

- On May 8th, 1945 (the year that WWII ended) British prime minister Winston Churchill announced that the war was over. Today is the 75th anniversary.

- VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day. 

- Germany agreed that they had lost the war and that the fighting should stop. 

- Millions of people had died in WWII, so everyone was really happy that the fighting was over. 

- Winston Churchill went on the radio and told everyone about Germany surrendering. But many people found out about it in 1945 because the church bells started ringing. 

- Lots of people came out onto the street dressed in red, white and blue. 

- They held parties in the street to celebrate with everyone that the war was over. 

- Because of rationing there wasn’t lots of food for sale, so everyone coming to the party had to bring something. 

- The King and Queen waved to everyone from the balcony of Buckingham palace. 

- Our current Queen and her sister went out and joined the party in the street! No one knew who they were!

- Everyone stayed up and there were bonfires and fireworks to celebrate.

Time Capsule: Parent/Guardian Interviews

Hey Kiddos!  Happy Friday! 

Today and this weekend we're going to do an interview with our parent (or any adult that is taking care of you!). 

We are going to ask them questions and write their answers in English.  You can translate the questions and ask them in Spanish (or any language they are comfortable in) and then write their answers in English. 

Or! You can also do two versions - one in your native language and one in English. 

You can add questions or ask only the ones that you think are interesting.

Active Voice into Passive Voice

We use the passive voice when we don't know who did the action or when the action is the most important thing in the sentence.

The passive voice is less usual than the active voice. But sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than in active voice.

The passive is formed with the verb to be and the past participle of the main verb. 

Examples:

Picasso painted Guernica. (Active)
Guernica was painted by Picasso. (Passive)

Birds sing the most beautiful tunes in the morning. (Active)
The most beautiful tunes are sung by birds in the morning. (Passive)
