VE Day!

Happy Friday everyone!

Today is VE day.

Do you know what VE day is?

- On May 8th, 1945 (the year that WWII ended) British prime minister Winston Churchill announced that the war was over. Today is the 75th anniversary.
- VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day.
- Germany agreed that they had lost the war and that the fighting should stop.
- Millions of people had died in WWII, so everyone was really happy that the fighting was over.

- Winston Churchill went on the radio and told everyone about Germany surrendering. But many people found out about it in 1945 because the church bells started ringing.

- Lots of people came out onto the street dressed in red, white and blue.
- They held parties in the street to celebrate with everyone that the war was over.

- Because of rationing there wasn’t lots of food for sale, so everyone coming to the party had to bring something.

- The King and Queen waved to everyone from the balcony of Buckingham palace.
- Our current Queen and her sister went out and joined the party in the street! No one knew who they were!

- Everyone stayed up and there were bonfires and fireworks to celebrate.

What do you think is happening in this photo from VE day?

- Option A
The man in the photo is Winston Churchill and it is his birthday. People have gathered to celebrate his birthday.

- Option B
Winston Churchill has just delivered his VE Day speech to the nation.

- Option C
Britain has been invaded and he is trying to calm the nation down by waving his hat at them.

- Option D
These men are part of the royal family and they are celebrating VE Day.

  2. Hi Leah!
I think that the correct option is letter B, because the man with the hat and the smoke cigar is Winston Churchil, is not his birthday, he doesn´t belong to the royal family and it doesn´t seem that Britain has been invaded because they are happy.

I think that the correct option is the letter B, because Winston Churchill was not of the royal family and he appeared delivering his VE Day speech.
