Both/Neither/All/None

Hey!

I know this topic from unit 7 can be quite confusing, so I hope the explanation below helps:

  • Both is used in affirmative sentences when we refer to two things/people.
  • Neither is used in negative sentences when we are negating two subjects.
  • All is used in affirmative sentences when we refer to more than two things/people.
  • None is used in negative sentences when we are negating more than two subjects.

Here are some examples too:
  • Tom is English. Susan is English, too.
  • Both of them are English.
  • I can’t speak Japanese. My brother can’t speak Japanese, either.
  • Neither of us can speak Japanese.
  • Tom, Susan and Harry go out together.
  • All of them go out together.
  • My family members don't like playing golf.
  • None of them like playing golf.

Now, try to rewrite the sentences below:

1. Cats, dogs, birds and other animals are pets.

2. My sister and I like music.

3. I like apples and pears.

4. I know Peter, Sally and Thomas.

5. My glass is empty. Your glass is empty, too.

6. Britain, France and Germany are countries.

7. London and Liverpool aren’t in Scotland.

8. I don’t like classical music. My friends don’t like classical music, either.

9. I saw Peter and I saw John, too.

10. I bought the bread and I bought the milk.
