Semicolons; Use them Wisely

What is a semicolon?

A semicolon is a punctuation mark that is used to separate pieces of information in a sentence.

Rule number 1:

1. It is used to separate two independent clauses that share the same theme.

E.g. I went to see a movie with friends last week; we went to see the film for Sarah’s birthday. 

Rule number 2:

2. It is used to separate items in a list when each item has separate features. 

E.g. I went to the store and I needed to buy some crispy, chicken wings; a bunch of round, red apples; and some cold, semi-skimmed milk.

Activity 1:

1. Copy the following sentences, adding in semicolons where they are needed.

a.) I wanted to go get my hair cut it was clear that my hair was way too long. 

b.) You need to try this new video game additionally you need to get a computer upgrade to run it. 

c.) At school you need to have sharp colouring pencils multiple working pens and a complete maths set to be successful.

Activity 2:

2. Now we need to practice using the semicolon in some writing. Write a paragraph talking about a time you visited another place.

Victor 3A

The first one is small and blue and has ten tentacles. It´s a friendly monster. It eats sea rocks and lives in an abyssal fosse.The second one is big and red and has a big eyes. It´s a friendly monster. It eats grass and lives in a cave.The third one is a medium-sized and orange monster and has six arms. It´s a friendly monster. It eats trees and lives in the forest.My favorite one is the small and blue monster.

 My monster is female, it is small, green and purple. It has three eyes and one small mouth. It has four legs and two antennas like a ladybug. It has whiskers like a cat. It likes to eat ice cream and apple. It lives in my imagination.👾👾

My monster is Garmadon. Lord Garmadon is a monster who doesn't have family, he is a bad monster who has three legs and two wings and is black, brown, purple, orange and pink. He can transform in a dragon. It has the power to control the dark.

My monster is orange whith green circules, and also have two eyes but eights arms and two legs.Two ears, a medium mouth and is friendly. It's like chips, pizza and hamburgers. And it's lives in my imagination.

My monster is round and blue in color.  It has very funny green horns.  Its body is smooth and smells of caramel.  "Sweet dreams", which is what it is called, protects children at night so they don't have nightmares.

Creative Writing: Creating your Own Moral Story

As you know Oliver Twist has many morals in the story. 

I would like you to choose from one of the morals below and create your own story.

• Even the strongest need help from the weak.
• You don’t need to be strong to win.
• Appearances can be deceptive.
• If you lie to people, then no one will believe you when you tell the truth.
• Money is not the most important thing in life.

Don’t forget:

• To think about your characters - describe them.
• To think about the setting of your story – describe the location.
• To include a beginning, middle and end.
• To use connectives – and, but, so, because…
• To use full stops and commas (and even brackets).
• To write your story in the past – check your verbs!

Please, write 50 words minimum.

Draw a Monster

Happy Monday! I hope that you all had a good weekend!

Today I want you to get creative and invent a MONSTER! 

It can be cute, scary, funny, silly, abstract  - however you want! Just make sure it's something that YOU invent!

The Final Chapter

Oliver knew that Mr Brownlow lived in London. He wanted to see him again. He asked Rose, "Can we visit Mr Brownlow?" "Yes, I want to meet Mr Brownlow," Rose said. Oliver was very happy. Rose wanted to tell him Nancy's secret. She knew he was a good man. Oliver was extremely happy when he saw Mr Brownlow and Mrs Bedwin. After a while, Rose said, "Mr Brownlow, can I talk to you alone?" Rose told Mr Brownlow about Nancy's visit. "What cruel people!" said Mr Brownlow. "Only Nancy can help us," said Rose. "But we must wait until Sunday night." 

It was eleven o'clock on Sunday night. Sikes and Fagin heard the church bell. Nancy heard it too. "I’m going out," said Nancy. She put on her hat and left. Fagin looked at Sikes and said, "One of my boys can follow her!" It was a very foggy night. Nancy went to London Bridge and met Rose and Mr Brownlow. Fagin's boy followed Nancy and hid behind some steps. He listened to everything. Mr Brownlow said to Nancy, "We are here to help Oliver. We must find Monks." "You can find Monks at the Red Lion Hotel in King Street. He is tall and wears a black coat. He has black hair and a cruel face,” replied Nancy.

 

Fagin's boy ran to tell Fagin and Sikes everything. Fagin was furious. His eyes were red and his face was white. He was afraid of prison and death. Sikes hated Nancy because she wanted to help Oliver. "I want to kill Nancy!" cried Sikes. So, he took his pistol and went to kill Nancy. Suddenly, he heard voices outside. "Murderer!" Sikes went to the window. He saw people with torches in front of the house. They saw his face at the window. "There he is!" they cried. "The murderer! Let's catch him! Let's break the door!" Sikes was afraid. He thought about prison and death. "I must escape from the roof on the river side". But it was very dark. Sikes lost his balance and fell to the street. Sikes was dead! 

Mr Brownlow went to the Red Lion Hotel and found Monks! He took him to Miss Maylie's house and locked him in a room. "I know a lot about you and your criminal friends. You have a brother called Oliver," said Mr Brownlow. “I know your family history. You are Oliver's half-brother. You have the same father, but not the same mother. Your mother was bad. She left your father. He then met and loved a beautiful girl called Agnes. One day he went to Rome for work. Before he went, he told me about Agnes. In Rome your father became ill and died.” Monks face was white. He was very nervous. “Sign your name on this piece of paper. It tells the truth about Oliver and his father. It gives Oliver's money from his father back to him. Sign it, Monks, and you are free," said Mr Brownlow. He was silent for a while. Then he said, "Give me that paper. I want to sign it." Monks read the paper and signed it. 

Later, the police found Fagin and put him in prison. Fagin was hanged for all his crimes. Monks went to America and died in prison there. 

 

Mr Brownlow adopted Oliver. He, Mrs Bedwin and Oliver went to live in a lovely house in the country. They were very happy together. Their house was near the Maylies’ house. As Oliver grew up, Mr Brownlow taught him many things. Oliver loved his new family very much. After all his adventures, Oliver finally found a loving family, true friends and a comfortable home.

So, what’s the moral?
A moral is a lesson about what is right or wrong, which you can learn from a story.
